Welcome

Three Days by the Lake, With Our Favourite People

We're getting married at Tegernsee in August 2027, and we'd love you there. Some of you are travelling a long way for this, and we don't take that lightly.

Everything you need is on this page: what happens on each day, where to stay, how to get here, and answers to the things people usually ask. If something is missing, just ask us.

The weekend

What Happens, and When

Three days, and only one of them is compulsory. Here is the shape of it.

Thursday 12 August

Afternoon by the Pool

If you are already in town, come by. Nothing formal, no schedule, just a slow afternoon by the pool with whoever has made it. Entirely optional.

Friday 13 August

Welcome Evening

We will do something during the day, still working out what. In the evening we all sit down together at Freihaus Brenner, up above the lake. This is the official welcome, so if you only make one evening before the wedding, make it this one.

Freihaus Brenner

Saturday 14 August

The Wedding Day

Ceremony under the big tree, dinner as the light goes, then a party in the marquee for as long as everyone lasts. Exact timings closer to the date.

28 February 2027

It takes about two minutes, and it helps us more than you would think. One form per invitation.

If your plans change after that, email us. We would much rather hear late than not at all.

Where to stay

Somewhere to Sleep

We have held rooms at a few places nearby. Book early if you can, August is high season around the lake and the good rooms go.

  • Still confirming

We are holding rooms at three more places and will add them here as soon as they are signed.

Getting Here

Flying

Munich Airport (MUC) is the one to aim for, about 90 km away and roughly 60 minutes by car. Munich city centre is a similar drive.

By train

The BRB runs from München Hauptbahnhof to Holzkirchen, then splits towards Tegernsee and towards Miesbach. The closest stations are:

  • Holzkirchen
  • Miesbach
  • Gmund
  • Tegernsee

You will want a car

The venue is out in the fields and none of the stations are within walking distance. Taxis are scarce out here and do not simply appear on a Saturday night, so hire a car if you can, or agree to share with someone who has.

The valley

While You Are Here

Tegernsee is an hour from Munich and has been where Bavarians come to slow down for about a thousand years. The lake is clean enough to swim in, the mountains start at the water's edge, and there is a brewery in the old monastery. If you are making a few days of it, this is what we would do.

Things to do

  • Swim in the lake

The water is properly clear and warm enough by August. Strandbad Seeglas in Gmund is the easiest place to get in, with a lawn, a jetty and a terrace for afterwards.

  • Ride the Wallbergbahn

A cable car from Rottach-Egern up to 1,620 metres, then a few hundred metres on foot to the little chapel at the top. The view back down the lake is the one everybody photographs.

More (opens in a new tab)
  • Get on a boat

Ships run between Gmund, Tegernsee, Bad Wiessee, Rottach-Egern and Kaltenbrunn. Hop off, wander a village, pick up a later one.

More (opens in a new tab)
  • Cycle around the lake

There is a circular route that runs right along the water. Rent a bike in any of the towns. It is flat, and it makes a gentle half day.

  • Walk up to an alm

Trails go up from the valley floor in every direction. Schwarzentenn Alm and the Siebenhütten are the easy, pretty ones, and both end somewhere that serves food.

Worth a look

  • Tegernsee Abbey

The old monastery on the eastern shore, now home to the ducal brewery and its Bräustüberl. Worth walking into even if you are not stopping for a beer.

  • Rottach-Egern

The smartest of the villages, with a long lakeside promenade and the mountains standing up directly behind it.

  • Bad Wiessee

A spa town on the western shore, quieter than the rest, and the right side of the lake for watching the light go in the evening.

  • Gmund

The northern end, and the closest village to where we are getting married. Walk the promenade from the Seeglas lido to the Mangfall bridge.

Eat and drink

  • Herzogliches Bräustüberl

    Tegernsee

    1 / 3

A beer hall in the old monastery with a garden that seats 750 and Tegernseer coming straight from the cellars next door. Go for the roast pork rather than the subtlety.

  • Haubentaucher

    Rottach-Egern

    2 / 3

A small place on the lakeside promenade doing genuinely careful cooking in a relaxed room. Book ahead, it is not big.

  • Gourmetrestaurant Dichter

    Rottach-Egern

    3 / 3

Two Michelin stars, at the Parkhotel Egerner Höfe. If you are going to have one long dinner while you are here, have it here.

You will already know Freihaus Brenner from Friday evening. It is worth going back to in daylight for the view alone.

Questions

Things People Ask

When do you need to know by?

By 28 February 2027, so we can finish the planning. The form is in the RSVP section further up this page.

Can I bring a plus one?

We would love to say yes to everyone, but the guest list is limited, so we can only seat the people named on your invitation. If there is a particular reason you would like to bring someone, talk to us and we will see what we can do.

Can we bring our children?

Please get in touch with us directly and we will work something out together.

Is it indoors or outdoors?

Thursday by the pool and Friday evening at Freihaus Brenner are both outside, weather permitting. On Saturday the ceremony and the reception are outside too, then dinner and the party move into a marquee. If the weather turns, everything moves in.

What will the weather be like?

Mid-August is usually somewhere between 20 and 28 degrees with a lot of sun. Germany does not always cooperate, so bring a jacket or something warm for the evening. It drops quickly once the sun goes behind the mountain.

Is there anything you would like as a gift?

Honestly, you making the journey is the gift. If you would still like to give us something, we would much rather you put it towards a project that matters to us.

I want to give a speech. Who do I tell?

Maya, Jake or Melanie, below. Please do not surprise us on the night, only because the timings are tighter than they look.

Who to Ask

If you are planning a speech or a surprise, or you just need an answer we have not given here, these three know more about the running order than we do.
